Setting Up Your Harmon Kardon 6.1/7.1 Amp
1. All HK receivers are designed for flexibility and sound accuracy
2. The receivers can not be configured unless audio signal of any type is run through them. A complete configuration is only possible when a DD, DTS and a stereo signal could be routed into the receiver
3. The levels set-up is NOT universal! It is applied to the specific input or sound field (AC3, DTS, DPL II etc).
  Example:
Configuration ofr DD 6.1 will put the levels at:

Front R +2 SBR-4
Centre -1 SBR-4
Front L +3 Surround L-3
Surround R-1 Sub-1

While the levels for DTS are:

Front R +2 Sur.Back R-6
Centre -1 Sur.Back L-4
Front L +1 Surround L-5
Surround R-4 Sub+2

Those two set-ups will apply to the same input! And will alter automatically when the signal received changes from one to another.
4.
The speakers size set-up is NOT universal! It is applied to the specific input (CD, DVD, Video1 etc.) and/or sound field (AC3, DTS, DPL II etc.).
For Example: Using floor standing full range speakers as L and R with a sub for the LFE set the amp for front: Large and the LFE routed to the speakers (No Sub).
For playing any form of digital surround you can configure the DD and DTS to route the bass to the sub as per the example below:

Left/Right Large
Centre Small
Surround Back Small
Surround Small
Subwoofer (LFE)

Those two set-ups will apply to the same input! And will alter only when the signal received changes from 5 to 2 channels.
5.
Speakers size / x-over set-up. Unique to the HK configuration is the ability to set-up Independant cross-over points for each set of speakers that makes up the 6.1/7.1.
Example: when connecting the receivers (4550/5550) to a sub/sat system you can choose the size of the speakers and in addition to it you can specify the x-over point that you feel is the most appropriate.
The improvement in the ability of the speaker to integrate with the sub has to be heard to be believed.
Size x-over
Front Small 80
Centre Small 120
SBL/SBR Small 100
Surround (LFE) --
LFE (LFE) 80
